The Garden is In!

I am not sure why I am writing this post. In fact, it bewilders me. If you know me well, you know I have a (very) black thumb. I have two plants in my house, and though the ivy looks fine, the peace lily is suffering. This is a perpetual problem. Just ask my sister and mother-in-law who are always saving my flower beds.

A couple of months ago, Dennis came home chatting away excitedly about his "idea." Imagine my fear when the idea was, of all things, a garden. A project for the kids, he said. Sell the stuff in the local Farmers Market. For their college funds. The last phrase intrigued me. We started making plans for our garden.

Fast forward to today, and after lots of work and advice from friends and family there are seeds and seedlings in the ground, and it is raining. And the "idea" has grown. Wanna know what we planted (and will hopefully be harvesting in a few months)? Here's the list:

Cucumbers, Bell Peppers, Jalopeno Peppers, Sweet Corn, Black Eyed Peas, Squash, Zucchini, Beets and Okra.

Given my history with anything green, I have decided to add my own contribution with the girls' help. We will be selling baked goods each week. We haven't firmed anything up yet, but our focus will be gourmet cupcakes and cookies, with the flavors changing weekly. I may be a black thumb, but baking I can handle!

And now I remember why I am updating the blog (though the title has nothing to do with this!). We have had lots of baking practice lately, with Avery and Sam's birthdays just a few days apart in April. Avery celebrated her fourth birthday with a cupcake shaped cake.
And we had the traditional first birthday carrot cake at Sam's birthday. He did NOT care for the smash cake and kept trying to push the cake off of his high chair tray.
I cannot believe my "babies" are four and one. Time flies when you're having fun!
On a side note...I have been kicking around the idea for a new (additional) blog with a different angle. Stay tuned...

What a fun idea Jessica...a garden. The kids will have fun with it - probably complain a lot too, but it will be a good experience for them. :) Oh and I love the cupcake cake - too fun!
